Childs Play
“Play is really important to children—it’s their form of communication. It’s how they express themselves. We try to normalize their experience while they’re experiencing trauma or after they have dealt with trauma in the past, to get back to a baseline and help them to just be kids.”
A Made Up Mind understands that illnesses and traumatic life events or procedures have the potential to cause anxiety and fear in people, but especially in children. To ease these feelings and help our families prepare for and cope with their traumas, we offer child life services, music therapy, art therapy, play therapy and therapeutic recreation in part through our Clinicians and Trauma Specialists.
Depending on the person, he or she may learn best by playing, creating art, or making music. Our child life Trauma specialists help our families and children who are experiencing mental illness, injury or are being treated for a chronic condition to better understand and deal with their experiences. We encourage parents and siblings to participate at their comfort level, as we strongly support the importance of maintaining the family unit during traumatic experiences and challenging life events such as homelessness, job loss, relocating, domestic violence, military deployment, loss of life etc.
